Why Saltburn

The Victorian Spa town of Saltburn has become a staple on the North Yorkshire coastline. The stunning beach is an attraction in itself, with the pleasure pier being the only one of its kind on the whole of the North East and Yorkshire coast. Saltburn is also the host of one of the UK’s largest surfing competitions, UK Professional Surf Tour, attracting plenty of competitors and spectators annually. Plus, if you feel inspired, the Surf School is on hand for lessons as well as wetsuit and surfboard hire.

Taking a trip on the cliff lift, which is one of the oldest water-powered funiculars in the world, you’ll reach the town area. There’re many independent businesses and shops to be perused in the town, and you are bound to find something completely unique. Though the shops bring some modernity, there is no end of traditional features and architecture that let you imagine what a stroll around town would have been like in the Victorian era.

There is a wealth of natural beauty to be explored here. The Valley Gardens combines natural woodlands with colourful, preserved flower displays in the Victorian gardens. There’s also the woodlands wildlife centre, tea rooms, and a miniature railway. Plenty to keep families entertained.

There is no shortage of places to eat and drink in Saltburn, offering everything from classic fish and chips, to Italian, Indian, and so much more. The best way to sample all the amazing food and drink the town has to offer is to visit the annual Food Festival. Held in July, the festival is a huge street market, with stalls offering food to sample or buy and take home. The festival is always a huge success and definitely worth a visit.
