Visit Staithes

Why Staithes?

Former home of explorer Captain James Cook, Staithes is a beautiful village that lies on the North East Coast, just before the town of Whitby. It’s distinctly muddled houses and cottages, and winding streets and paths give the former fishing port heaps of character and interest. An excellent base for those interested in exploring the towering Yorkshire cliff tops, with quaint bed and breakfasts and local fishermen’s cottages available to stay in, it’s the perfect seaside getaway.

There’s more to explore than may meet the eye. A popular spot for geology enthusiasts and fossil hunters, the village sits on what’s known as the “Dinosaur Coast”. There’s organised fossil hunting trips to partake in, or you can explore independently around the village and on to Runswick Bay.

The beautiful scenery has lent itself to art throughout history. The village is home to a small group of artists known as the “Staithes Group”. The Staithes Gallery can be found on the High Street, and showcases the best of local artwork. Every year in September, the village is host to the Staithes Festival. Over the festival weekend, residents, artists, cafes and street food stalls open their doors to the public to display their arts, crafts and creations. The festival is incredibly popular across the region, with the usually quiet and still village becoming a hive of activity for those few days in Autumn.
