Why Skinningrove?

Once a busy hub of ironstone mining, Skinningrove’s ironstone workings opened in 1848 and production continued for over 100 years, producing iron until the 1970’s. Now, Skinningrove is more tranquil, and a popular destination for a short getaway.

Skinningrove sits on the 109-mile long Cleveland Way walking route which is incredibly popular with both locals and tourists. The route passes adjacent to Cattersty Sands beach. The long sand and shingle beach features the rocky pier which dates back to Skinningrove’s mining era. The beach is relatively sheltered and perfect for a day out on a sunny day – taking a dip in the North Sea to cool down.

Learn more about Skinningrove’s mining past at the Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum, go underground and experience how the ironstone was extracted and how the miners used to work. The museum also displays artefacts, photos and documents to preserve the village’s mining heritage.

Skinningrove has plenty of amazing places to stay, take a look!
